Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on land proposed for development adjacent to the Greyhound Inn. An undatable ditch was possibly a boundary of the medieval green. A range of buildings of post-medieval date had disturbed part of the site, but their foundations were insubstantial. Pottery and flints were recovered but could not be positively associated with any archaeological features. Their existence did, however attest to a prehistoric and Early Saxon occupation in the immediate vicinity, this was the first Early Saxon material recorded in Flempton. The evaluation showed that there was archaeological potential on the site generally. However in the building footprints, the archaeological level was either already heavily disturbed or protected by a deep overburden. Whilst further work may be necessary in specific threatened areas extensive excavation was not envisaged. [Au] |
