Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a planning condition. The preliminary part of archaeological works was a watching brief on geotechnical works. The second phases involved the opening of two machine-excavated trenches. The first of these trenches revealed a modern basement extending to 1.5m below the current surface. The second trench produced evidence of archaeological remains. Although the works were very limited in nature it was clear that substantial deposits of post-medieval and possibly medieval dump material was overlying redeposited or disturbed brickearth. This result was supported by the findings of the earlier watching brief, which encountered similar deposits. However, both trench 1 and evidence from the watching brief indicated that a number of later intrusions had truncated the archaeological deposits to varying degrees. [Au(abr)] |
