Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within the grounds of Compton Verney House, at two sites proposed for the construction of an art gallery and a car-park. The sites lay in the immediate vicinity of the known area of the deserted medieval village of Compton Verney; the site of the existing house was likely to occupy that of earlier manor houses. During the evaluation, walls belonging to demolished 18th century service wings were revealed, and a roughly built limestone drain which probably related to 18th century landscaping activity was observed. Two undated banks and ditches forming boundaries, probably of medieval or post-medieval date, were also recorded. No evidence of the medieval village was found. [Au(adp)] |
