Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on the retail and residential redevelopment of the site. Although it was impossible to establish a precise stratigraphy for the site, a basic phasing of the site development was discerned: An initial period (of undetermined date and duration) during which pits were dug into undisturbed subsoil and subsequently backfilled, probably with refuse from occupation and demolition activity. A period of occupation when part of the site was apparently sealed beneath a layer of packed chalk, perhaps to create an exterior surface (or alternatively the floor of a building); in certain areas hollows created by wear or slumping were later refilled with new chalk. In the south-western half of the site there was little sign of the chalk layer which might be explained in two ways: firstly that this area was already or about to be occupied by something else and secondly that later activity removed the chalk layer. The excavation of at least two masonry-lined wells in the north-west corner of the site, either before or after the construction of buildings along the present Sun Lane frontage. Eventually the chalkyard was levelled and covered in tarmac, while the range of buildings gradually decayed into a sprawl of semi-derelict sheds and garages. [Au(adp)]
