Abstract: |
<summary>On 6 March 1992 the discovery of a well at 22-26 Swan Street, Warwick, was reported to the Warwickshire Museum. The well, located in a yard area behind shops fronting onto Swan Street, was found during building works. The well was approximately 16 feet deep and had a diameter of just over 3 feet at the top. The well shaft was in three distinct sections of varying diameters, the upper section comprising the first eight feet of the shaft. It was completely lined with coursed stone blocks of probably local sandstone. There were ten courses in the upper section; the blocks varied in thickness from 10-12 inches and each was cut with a round face. There was no evidence for the presence of mortar between the blocks. The well appeared to have survived almost to the original ground level, as traces of a well pit were noticed. The well is believed to be of 18th century date, and is one of a number recorded in the centre of Warwick since 1910. {italon}Au(abr/adp){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} WA2164 |
