Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it lay within the backlands area of the Saxon and later town of Guildford. Archaeological investigations at a nearby site had revealed considerable evidence of medieval activity in the form of pits and wells, despite the fact that modern ground disturbance had occurred to a depth of 0.6m across much of the site. Further medieval features had been recorded elsewhere in the vicinity. It was found that the proposal area could be divided into six distinct areas of differing potential archaeological impact. A combined watching brief and archaeological excavation was recommended. [AIP] |
