Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken at "The Hop Pole Inn", Bridge Street, Leominster, in response to a request by the Leominster District Building Control Officer, who had observed bone and pottery during the excavation of a trench for underpinning on the Bridge Street frontage of the building. The inn, a 17th century timber framed building, lies within an area of tenement plots identified by the Central Marches Historic Towns Survey as a component of the medieval and post-medieval town on the basis of cartographic, topographic and documentary evidence. Three significant layers were identified in the west facing section of the trench. The 17th century timber frame of the inn rested on a layer of bricks and mortar over a plastic sheet. Underneath this was a layer (c. 0.5m thick) of orange sandy clay containing a high proportion of brick fragments and other rubble; this deposit contained fragments of 20th century glass. The rubble sealed a thick deposit of black, waterlogged organic material containing lenses of grey clay. Medieval pottery, animal bone and horn cores, leather shoe fragments and plant remains were recovered from this deposit,\nwhich was at least 0.8m thick (bottom not revealed in trench). Taken together, the finds evidence suggests that this was not a normal domestic site. The presence of horn cores and leather hints at leather-based industries such as tanning and cobbling and possible bone working. There was also some evidence that flax cultivation / processing was taking place in the vicinity of the site.[AIP]
