Abstract: |
Archaeological stratigraphy recorded in the trenches appeared to reflect the mix of agricultural/industrial activity which was known to have taken place on, or near to, the site prior to the construction of the packaging works. Trenches 1-3 recorded redeposited evidence of industrial activity (in the form of coal, slag and cinder waste) presumably derived either from the Champion Brassworks, Haskins Pottery, or the West of England Ochre Works. Trenches 4 and 5 contained structural remains of Crown Farm, which occupied a site on the eastern side of Tower road just south of the junction with Station Road. Of most importance, however, was the recovery of a small, but nonetheless significant, assemblage of medieval and early post-medieval pottery the presence of which appeared to reflect some type of medieval/early post-medieval activity close to the site.
