Abstract: |
A series of eight boreholes were sunk, four of which were intended to ascertain the location and depth of the ditches of the medieval castle and the related course of the River Foss. These revealed the moat to be narrower than predicted or following a different course. The other four boreholes were to assess the nature and depth of natural deposits in areas of the castle precinct away from the ditches. These concluded that the natural deposits sloped towards the River Foss in the southern part of the site, and identified the possible presence of a cut feature of an undeterminable nature.
