Abstract:
Archaeolgocial excavation, followed by watching brief was undertaken prior to the construction of an office block and residential apartments. The fieldwork carried out was concerned with the excavation of a stratified urban medieval and post-medievals ite. For much of the area there was a well defined and dated stratigraphic sequence, with all artefacts dating prior to the 12th-13th centuries residual in layer contexts or unstratified. The earliest phase of activity identified was in the 13th century, when a sequence of large intercutting pits were dug. These contained domestic refuse, possibly from a fairly wealthy household. Quantities of disarticulated human remains were also found in these contexts, perhaps discarded from the adjacent churchyard. In the latter part of the 13th century the plot was incorporated into the cemetery. Presumably this took place as there was a neeed for expansion due to overcrowding in a period of economic prosperity and population growth. This phase of use appeared to have spanned at least a century. However, depite severe truncation, it was clear that few burials were ever placed in this plot. A period of abandonment followed, and the site was not reused until the 18th century, when it was once again incorporated into the domestic landscape of the town. [Au(adp)]
