Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within part of an area proposed for a business park. Previous desk-based assessment had identified that field boundaries associated with the medieval Howley Grange had been recorded near the site, and that Bronze Age burnt mounds lay 1.5km to the east. A separate geophysical survey had identified several magnetic anomalies and an area of magnetic disturbance. During the evaluation, post-medieval field drains and modern plough scarring were revealed, and modern pottery and tile fragments were recovered. The magnetic disturbance was found to have been caused by modern dump deposits, whilst some of the small anomalies coincided with evidence of root action. It was concluded that the site had probably been open agricultural land for much of its history, and that any activity which had occurred had been sufficiently ephemeral to have been eroded by ploughing.
