Abstract:
The site of the proposed development (of two extensions to Hadrian Primary School and the laying of an all-weather pitch) was adjacent to the Roman fort of Arbeia at South Shields, which formed part of the Hadrians Wall Military Zone World Heritage Site as designated by UNESCO in 1987 and was a SAM. The environs of the fort contained the remains of the surrounding Roman vicus (extra-mural civilian settlement), cemeteries, and the unlocated site of a Roman Port. The development site lay within an archaeological notification zone. This development would almost certainly affect archaeological evidence for the poorly understood remains of the Roman civilian settlement, remains of high heritage significance. As such, further evaluation work was recommended to determine the extent of survival and informative potential of this evidence. This should consist of an evaluation trench in one (the southern) of the proposed extension areas and an evaluation trench in the area of the all-weather pitch. In the area of the second (northern) of the proposed extensions, where previous archaeological work had shown the presence of significant Roman archaeological deposits only 6m to the south, a full archaeological excavation of the area was recommended before any development work takes place.
