Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an office development with a two-storey car-park. Evidence of medieval occupation had previously been recorded in the vicinity of the site. During the evaluation, a series of four linear field ditches was revealed, one of which contained Saxo-Norman pottery dating from 950-1150. These were sealed by a mid 13th to mid 14th century deposit. Two evaluation trenches in the south part of the site contained deposits of mid 14th to late 16th century date, whilst a further trench revealed mid 14th to early 16th century features. These included a pit and a gully. A post-18th century wall and a probable ditch were also recorded; the latter contained 17th century pottery, a fragment of 17th century glass and two medieval artefacts. The late medieval features suggested that this part of the Guildford Street frontage was developed in the later medieval period, but that the development did not extend as far south as the junction with Pyrcroft Road.
