Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on the removal and replacement of c.400mm of soil within four of the permanent rose beds laid out in the formal garden area which was within the Abbey Precinct and was designated a SAM. The up-cast spoil was a dark-brown or black sandy loam topsoil with small mortar fragments dispersed within it. The excavation was stopped at the flat, regular interface with the layer below; this was of similar form but a distinguishably lighter colour. The only divergence from these norms was in the south west bed where a flint cobble deposit with orange aggregate was encountered c.350mm down in a straight sided deposit 50mm thick which followed the west side of the garden bed. This had late 19th/early 20th century pottery between the stones. The 1887 OD 1:500 sheet showed that lean-to glass houses once abutted the west wall of the garden, with a path between these and the garden; it seemed probable that the cobble surface was this path.
