Abstract:
A trial trench evaluation was undertaken in advance of residential development. The site lay to the north of the Saxon and medieval settlement, probably centred around St. Andrew's Parish church. Two struck flints were recovered from the topsoil and subsoil. All the other features were post-medieval or modern. There was no evidence for structural remains associated with the late 18th century wharf, although 19th century structural remains were abundant along the street frontage. There were no alluvial deposits to indicate that the site had once been water meadows utilised in the medieval period. The thinness of the subsoil indicted that the site had been extensively landscaped, probably during construction and development from the late 18th and early 19th century. [Au(abr)]
