Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a superstore identified that a number of prehistoric artefacts had been found in the surrounding area, including a Mesolithic scraper, a Neolithic polished flint axe, Bronze Age arrowheads and a Bronze Age mace head. Several post-medieval mill sites had also been recorded. It was noted that any potential archaeological material in the area of the sports centre buildings and swimming pool at the proposal site would probably have been removed, but that the potential of other parts of the site was uncertain, as deposits may not necessarliy have been disturbed. It was recommended that trial trenching should be carried out, initially in the present grassed recreation areas, and that a watching brief might also be appropriate. [AIP] |
