Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintined following the granting of Scheduled Monument Consent to remove silts and rubbish from the moat. Works in the south end of the east arm revealed silt and organic material above about 1 metre of redeposited clay containing lenses of coarse sand and gravel, as well as fragments of wood, including a possible fence post. During the excavation of this area it was noted that the brick sluice and associated walling was founded upon a series of horizontal timber baulks set in undisturbed clay. The redeposited clay extended to the south of the sluice and overlay a gravel layer previously described as the lining of the moat. Clearance of the eastern arm revealed a line of timber posts on the east side of the moat floor. Clearance of the northern and western arms of the moat revealed nothing of archaeological significance and the brick access bridge crossing the western arm of the moat was again founded upon a series of horizontal timber baulks (the bridge was thought to date to post-1840).
