Abstract: |
A new scheme for wastewater treatment was proposed at Soutergate as part of the Duddon Estuary Wastewater Treatment Improvements Programme. The proposals included the laying of a pipeline and construction of a treatment works. Oxford Archaeology North were commissioned to undertake a programme of works, including a desk-top assessment and a series of watching briefs, on all pipeline works within the survey area. In addition, an archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a new treatment works. The desk-top assessment produced a comprehensive background to the study area prior to the fieldwork. A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of 19 geotechnical test pits throughout the area. Three evaluation trenches were excavated. The stratigraphy encountered throughout both pieces of work was entirely natural. Indeed, there was a complete absence of anything of archaeological interest, only a handful of finds being retrieved, which were either fragments of modern pottery or rusted metalwork of no great age. The presence of a number of field drains was noted. [Au(abr)] |
