Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was commissioned in response to a proposal to build three three-storey town-houses on the site. The site of the proposed development lay 200m south of the Roman Fort of Arbeia at South Shields, which formed part of the Hadrian's Wall Military Zone World Heritage Site as designated by UNESCO in 1987 and was a SAM. The environs of the site contained the remains of the surrounding Roman vicus (civilian settlement), cemeteries, and the unlocated site of a port. Previous excavations and finds in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development strongly suggested that the site lay in the area of the Roman cemetery. Further, the preservation of cemetery features at the excavations at Morton Walk 1993-5, located 70m west of the site, suggested that archaeological deposits of similar importance may have survived in the area of the proposed development. Part of the area surrounding the fort was protected as an archaeological notification zone, but the full extent of the Roman settlement was presently uncertain. This development was likely to disturb archaeological deposits associated with the Roman cemetery. It was recommended that evaluation trenches be excavated to determine the extent of survival and informative potential of this evidence. [Au(abr)]
