Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a light industrial and warehousing development, which lay close to the probable location of barrows mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter. Iron Age pottery had been recovered during an evaluation at a nearby site, and the Surrey SMR listed a number of archaeological sites of prehistoric, Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval date within a 1km radius of the proposal area. During the evaluation, ten struck flints were recovered and a number of features were recorded, including a pit and a ditch containing Late Iron Age/Roman pottery, a pit containing Late Iron Age pottery, two undated post-holes and several undated pits. A substantial ditch interpreted as a possible enclosure boundary ditch was also revealed. This contained Late Iron Age pottery. It was concluded that the features may have represented a small rural settlement, occupied from the Late Iron Age through to the Roman period. [AIP] |
