Abstract: |
The watching brief revealed the former line of Market Street together with the foundations of some of the buildings that used to front it. The groundworks also uncovered the cellars of some of these buildings that were then emptied of their demolition rubble fill and subsequently filled with concrete. The cellars included a small area of barrel vaulting in one corner but this was a late addition in brick covering a small area only. The cellars corresponded in shape to the ground plan of buildings, which were first shown in detail on the Board of Health plan of 1851, and later on OS survey plans from the 1880's onwards. No evidence was recorded for the Neolithic or medieval occupation known from elsewhere in the vicinity. [Au(abr)] |
