Abstract: |
Observation of topsoil stripping north of the current working face of the quarry revealed a small group of pits containing significant quantities of heat-cracked quartz pebbles and a number of linear features in the sandy gravel subsoil. Four pits were fully excavated whilst a further two could only be partially examined due to their location on the quarry face. Both plain and decorated pottery sherds tentatively dated to the middle of the 1st millennium BC, along with flint flakes and fragments of quernstone were recovered from the pit group, as well as quantities of charcoal. Soil samples from the pits contained some cremated bone; they may have contained charred plant remains although their was little expectation of other macrofossil or pollen remains surviving. Further topsoil stripping in October showed the features did not extend further to the north. [Au(abr)] |
