| Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a planning condition prior to development. Evidence from the SMR record that the general archaeological potential for evidence of ancient activity was low, especially in view of the area of ground disturbance. The SMR record indicated that there was a paucity of known archaeological sites in the vicinity and the general picture for settlement in wealden clay areas in antiquity was that it was not intensively settled, although its resources were valued. Interest was centred on the mill itself and any precursors of the present buildings, and the potential for discoveries related to these was clearly high. [Au(adp)] |
