Abstract: |
An archaeological earthwork survey and evaluation was undertaken of the proposed quarry extension site. A detailed earthwork survey of part of the wood was carried out; revealing a series of phases of activity, including features interpreted as iron mine pits, as well as later marl pits, and associated trackways and drainage channels. Subsequently, a series of evaluation trenches were excavated in order to further investigate the features identified in the survey, to expose any negative features and recover dating evidence. While the constructional sequence and date of several later features was revealed, little further information relating to the mine pits was recovered, only one undated post hole was identified in the vicinity of a minepit and no datable artefactual material was found. An examination was also made of a burnt area to the north of the wood, which had been exposed during earlier topsoil stripping. Several fragments of slag were recovered. [Au(abr)] |
