Abstract: |
Observation of a deep engineering test pit allowed for the observation of the foundations of Nevill's Tower. Unexpectedly, there appeared to have been a considerable amount of groundwork carried out to lay the foundations of the tower, and possibly the castle itself. The absence of a coal layer observed in a nearby borehole may account for the infilling, suggested that the coal may have been extracted and the resulting pit infilled with various materials for foundations.
