Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site of a mill was undertaken. The site had a history dating back to the late Anglo-Saxon period, and had been in continuous use for milling throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods. The existing layout of the Lucy's Mill Sluice and Weir dated from 1833, although much of the structure, along with that of Stratford Weir, would have been repaired or rebuilt since that time. It was concluded that any remains relating to late Saxon and medieval mills at the site were likely to have been removed by post-medieval rebuildings. Much of the refurbishment work would not involve extensive earthmoving, with the exception of the repair and replacement of the Lucy's Mill Sluice. Archaeological observation and recording of this phase of the work was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
