Abstract:
A desk-top study of the centre of Bristol was undertaken in association with the Bristol Civic Society proposals for the alteration of the layout of the centre, including the exposure of the course of the River Frome where it runs through the centre. The study area extended from Rupert Street in the north and to Broad Quay House at the south end. The area was originally marsh lying between the settlement of Bristol and another focus of settlement around the high ground by the Cathedral (formerly St Augustine's Abbey). During the 1240's the River Frome was diverted from its original course along St Stephen's and Baldwin Streets to create new wharfage. The area developed as a dock space until growing pressure from road traffic, coupled with the decline of the docks in the city centre, led to the culverting of the Frome as far as St Augustine;s Bridge in 1893, and the creation of Colston Avenue and Magpie park. The need to manage traffic in the 1930's led to a further stage of culverting downstream towards E Shed (now the Watershed) and the creation of a new road layout between 1937 and 1939. This was altered again in the 1950's. [Au]
