Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that a number of prehistoric artefacts had been found in the surrounding area, including a barbed and tanged arrowhead, three Mesolithic tranchet axes, a Late Bronze Age cinerary urn and an ironstone implement, thought to have been of Mesolithic date. A Romano-British cemetery and the former site of a telegraph station, built in 1821, had also been recorded. Cartographic evidence indicated that the area of the White Horse Hotel had been developed by the late 18th century, the proposal area itself having lain partly within the garden plot and partly within arable land. A barn at the site lay in a position which had been occupied since the early 19th century or earlier. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out, and that a watching brief should be undertaken in the area of the barn, which was to be demolished. [AIP] |
