Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail and leisure development identified that a small number of archaeological findspots had been recorded in the surrounding area. Artefacts found included a Neolithic handaxe and two Roman coins. At one site, a Palaeolithic handaxe and a number of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flints had been recovered. A conical mound lay to the north-east of the site. It was noted that the proposal site appeared to have undergone a certain degree of disturbance in connection with the creation of car parks and possibly buildings. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during development, on areas of ground disturbance exceeding 0.6m in depth. [AIP] |
