Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of development of the land for student halls of residence. No finds had been made on the site itself, but the Buckingham area had yielded finds from the Mesolithic period onwards. Within 1km of the site there was evidence for both Bronze Age (a ploughed-out round barrow) and Roman activity (a possible kiln site). Much of the area around the site exhibited ridge and furrow earthworks, indicating the use of the land during medieval (and probably later Saxon) times as farmland. Although such earthworks were extant all around the proposed development, they were not present within the site itself. [Au(abr)] |
