Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The assessment revealed that the site, in general terms, lay within an archaeologically rich part of the Thames Valley. Furthermore, the site lay within an area of archaeological potential on the local plan constraints map. The site area, at c.0.4ha, was only just on the threshold of intervention defined by the Surrey County Structure Plan (0.4ha) but, within an urban context, the site occupied a relatively large area. However, when the specific details of the site and its environs were addressed, the archaeological potential of the site was rather less marked and required further consideration in conjunction with the development proposals. There were relatively few entries in the SMR for the area being studied and there were none for the site itself or adjacent properties. But, as is often revealed, the lack of entries within an historic town or village is often due more to a lack of opportunity of discovery than a genuine absence. Baker Street was in existence before 1729 and there was at least one property on or close to the site in 1768. This seemed to indicate that this part of the town lay just within the historic core of the settlement. Parts of the site had been subject to deeply invasive disturbance for the insertion of petrol storage tanks when the site was used as garage. This deep disturbance was located towards the street frontage and it was this location, within historic towns and villages, that would usually contain the most complex and detailed archaeological deposits. Areas to the rear were less obviously disturbed. There was no evidence for truncation, such as would result from gravel or clay extraction, on the maps or from field inspection or borehole logs. Until relatively recent times these rear areas were gardens or fields. The development proposal was to include basement car parking, which would cover the majority of the site. This would not allow for the casual survival of any deposits of interest. On balance, it was felt that the archaeological potential of the site was of sufficient merit that further investigation in the form of field evaluation should be undertaken. [Au(adp)] |
