Abstract:
The site lay just to the west of the postulated line of the former town ditch, and was recorded in the County Sites and Monuments Record as possibly being the site of the documented medieval hospital of SS Clement and Katherine, founded before 1504 (HWCM 3203). Significant medieval deposits were encountered, particularly at the western end of the site. These represent rubbish disposal features typical of backplot deposits, dating from the 12th to 14th centuries. Both environmental and artefactual evidence was recovered. Two features possibly representing the foundations of stone sleeper wall footings were identified; the dating of one indicates a 14th-15th century date, the other is undated. The whole area examined included a deposit of agricultural or garden soil dating to the 13th-14th centuries; this was both cut by and sealing medieval features. The line of the town ditch was confirmed and the date of its backfilling in this area established to be the 14th-15th century. The post-medieval deposits were of low density and primarily associated with the row of early 18th century timber framed tenements which stood on the south-west corner of the site until the 1950s. Documentary research forming part of this project provided new evidence identifying the site of the hospital of SS Clement and Katherine with "Spittle House", in the area known as "The Marsh" on the northern boundary of Leominster.[AIP]
