Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out commissioned by Brighton and Hove council during conservation and repair works at the Chanttri, near Patcham. The Chattri, a small domed shaped monument on the Downs, was dedicated to the Indian soldiers who died during the Great War in the Brighton hospital and later cremated on the Downs. The entire area around the study site was an area of prehistoric activity. The site was a Listed building, however "like for like" repairs fell outside the scope of Listed building Consent. The groundwork associated with the refurbishment of the monument had no adverse affect on the archaeological resources of the area. No archaeological deposits or features were disturbed by the shallow nature of the groundwork and therefore monitoring was terminated. [Au(adp)] |
