Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment and a walkover survey of the proposed site of a housing development were undertaken. A Mesolithic working site, Iron Age occupation evidence, a Roman cremation burial and Saxon graves had been recorded within a 1km radius of the site, whilst a Neolithic flake had been found at the nearby site of a post-medieval or earlier mill. Medieval pottery had been recovered in the area, and a late 15th century gatehouse to the south of the site represented the only remaining part of Esher Palace. It was concluded that the proposal site had a moderate archaeological potential. Trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
