Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The assessment found that the site was located near the remains of a possible 1st century tile or brick kiln discovered and excavated in the 1950s. The settlement at Potter's Bar was first recorded from the 14th century as an out-lying hamlet to the main settlement at South Mimms. The assessment area lay to the west of properties on the High Street and comprised fields attached to long-established tenements there. The earliest maps revealed a series of enclosed fields owned during the 18th century by Parkfield House which remained agricultural until the dissolution of the estate and construction of mass housing in the 1950s.
