Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out. The site was of archaeological interest due to its proximity to the pre-17th century construction along the river frontage. The site of the earlier Roman port facilities was unknown and may have lain within the area. During the course of the evaluation it became apparent that the site was heavily truncated and terraced into the natural clays during construction of a large graving dock within the former Brigham and Cowans Shipyard in 1955. The edge of the construction cut relating to this feature was recorded within one of the investigation trenches. As a result of this terracing, no deposits of archaeological significance survived in the area of the site. [Au(adp)] |
