Abstract:
A total area of 0.9ha, taking in approximately half of a medieval moated enclosure, was excavated in advance of a new highway. Evidence of prehistoric, Roman and early/middle Saxon activity was also recovered. A flint scatter and a single sherd of Neolithic pottery represented Neolithic and Bronze Age activity. Roman and early to middle Saxon occupation was denoted by shallow, linear and curvilinear ditch systems and associated finds. In the late Saxon period a series of linear ditches extended beyond the present excavation. In the 13th century a large moated enclosure was imposed onto the existing plot system. The remains of a major timber-framed manor house within the enclosure was fully excavated. [Au(abr)]
