Abstract: |
The Phase 1 archaeological investigation of the proposed development site involved a review of available documentary sources and geophysical survey. The principal interest in the site was that it was considered to lie within a 'round' settlement of Late Iron Age or Romano-British date. The provenance of 19th century discoveries of artefacts of the period could be shown to be within c.60m of the site, but geophysical survey was unable to provide any certain evidence for subsoil features of archaeological potential within the boundaries of the development area. A single linear feature was positively recorded but the definition of two further poorly-defined linear features was only tentative. No trace of an enclosure ditch could be detected to the south. The geophysical survey, however, was limited in its effectiveness due to the presence of magnetic interference. [Au] |
