Abstract: |
Soil stripping during construction works (for housing) revealed the eastern edge of the medieval town ditch. It also exposed a number of undated pits and two sections across the town bank and the line of the town wall down either side of the property. This bank was mostly composed of chalk which had been upcast from the town ditch. A large stone beneath the party wall, which marked the northern boundary of the site, was a remnant of an earlier north south wall. It could not be ascertained whether this was a part of the medieval town wall or a replacement property boundary on the same alignment. [Au] |
