Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that it did not lie within the limits of the original Saxon town of Guildford, and that there was little or no evidence to suggest that the area had been used for settlement prior to the medieval period. Medieval material had been found in Guildford, although only limited archaeological investigation had been carried out in the area. The late medieval town had extended into the general area where the site lay, but it was unclear whether it had actually reached the proposal site. It was noted that the site itself sloped steeply, and was therefore unlikely to have been settled at an early date. Observation of the initial stages of clearance at the site suggested that any near surface archaeological remains would have been destroyed during modern building and demolition episodes. It was recommended that no further archaeological work should be undertaken. [Au(adp)] |
