Abstract: |
Excavation on a triangular plot of land to the south-west of Millbridge and northwest of the River Lea was occasioned by proposed development of the site for mostly residential use. Medieval horizons were encountered close to the agreed depth limit of the excavation, and were therefore not fully examined as they would be unaffected by the proposed new buildings. Evidence of modern activity on the site comprised a series of brick wall footings, sealed by levelling layers for more recent hard surfaces and landscaping. According to cartographic evidence these probably represented part of a complex of brewery buildings erected on the site during the 19th century. The site was known to have been open ground to the rear of buildings on the Millbridge and Old Cross street frontage and the archaeological evidence, comprising garden soils and a gully and large pit, supports this.
