Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of the proposed site of an office development was undertaken. Bronze age and iron age pottery had been found in the area, whilst Roman buildings and rubbish pits had been excavated. A 12th century church and a 13th century priory had lain on the site. A trial pit in 1994 had revealed a chalk foundation, perhaps part of the priory church. Human bones were recovered from a later evaluation trench. It was concluded that a watching brief and some archaeological excavation work would be necessary. [AIP] |
