Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of proposals for the residential redevelopment of the site. Redcliffe in the medieval period was a large and prosperous suburb of Bristol, and St. Thomas Street was one of its three main thoroughfares. Although St. Thomas Street was first mentioned in 1285, archaeological excavation had suggested that some parts of the street were not developed until the early 14th century. The first cartographic evidence for the site suggested that by the middle of the 16th century the street frontage was fully developed, the backs of the properties having extensive gardens extending back to the law ditch. Certainly, a dwelling and stable occupied the northern part of the site by 1585. By the early 18th century, many of the properties were shown to have been used for both domestic and commercial purposes and it was possible that they had always been used in this way. Minor rebuilding appeared to have taken place and it was possible that in 1899 No. 107 or 108, now part of No. 20, was rebuilt. Nos. 107 to 113 were destroyed by enemy action in the air raids of 1940. Following the end of hostilities, the site remained ruinous until, in 1950 or soon after, it was redeveloped with the present buildings, now renumbered 18 and 20. These appeared to ignore the earlier property divisions. At the same time the build line was set back some 8m from its pre-war position, which itself was set back from the original medieval street line. The study suggested that the present building had had only a minor impact on the archaeological resource, although the heating chamber beneath No. 20 was almost certain to have removed all evidence of archaeology within its footprint.
