Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during clearance and construction work at a development site, which had been divided into six distinct areas of differing potential archaeological impact. Features of interest were revealed within only one part, area B. These consisted of a backfilled cellar, probably of 17th or early 18th century date, and a late 19th century brick soakaway which, unusually, had not been backfilled. Finds consisted of 17th century and later brick, pottery and clay pipe. It was concluded that the depth of disturbance over much of the site had not reached levels where material of archaeological interest was likely to be found. Relatively undisturbed layers were only encountered within area B; these suggested that either there had been little activity in this area in the medieval period, or that it was masked by 17th century and later activity.
