Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior the proposed construction of a golf course. The report concluded that the archaeological potential for the site was moderate. The area was probably heathland during the Mesolithic period, remaining undeveloped until the 19th century. The SMR indicates that the site is located near two groups of prehistoric barrows and referred to a collection of flint tools and flakes. There was little evidence of occupation, although the presence of earthworks verified human activity within the area. The site had been partly occupied by Potters Park, with evidence from the 15th century. The original location of Potters Park farmhouse was abandoned by c.1870, and a new farmhouse was established on the present site. By the mid/late-19th century the heathland seemed to have been enclosed. The area was shown to have undergone no significant development over the past hundred years, with the land either remaining wooded, being used for pasture, or used for Nursery planting. [Au(adp)] |
