Abstract: |
The assessment revealed that the study area lay within a valley that had formed part of the Bishop's Park and therefore had remained as pasture until the 1770s. At the south-western end of the park were three ponds, created by damming the small river running through the valley. These ponds were almost certainly fish ponds associated with St Augustine's Abbey. The road infrastructure of the study area was laid out in the early 1770s, but much of the housing was not completed until the end of the 18th century. Further demolition took place for the construction of Cabot House in the late 1950s and thereafter the study area was cleared by the 1960s for use as surface car parks. [Au(abr)] |
