Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation of three evaluation trenches and two areas of open excavation and a watching brief were carried out. Archaeological features dating to the medieval and post-medieval period were identified at the site. A series of tanning pits were identified during the evaluation within trench two and three. Four of these pits were seen within trench two and elements of others, subject to disturbance, within trench three. These were well constructed features and represented the remains of an extensive distribution of such features known from cartographic evidence. The excavation identified the presence of a sequence of timber structures located in the eastern part of the excavation area. These structures predated the establishment of the Dominican Friary in AD1239. Two timber buildings (A and B) were identified during phase 1, they were superseded by a further three structures (C, D and E) in phase 2. To the west of that was a boundary feature comprising a ditch and timber fence line. Phase 3 saw the foundation of the Dominican Friary in the northern part of the site. A substantial stone and rubble foundation was identified within the main excavation. During phase 4, a further stone building was constructed in the northern part of the site. [Au(adp)]
