Abstract: |
The first stage of the evaluation of the site in advance of proposed residential development was to collate and review historical documentary sources and cartographic information relating to the Patrington manorial complex, and to draw up an appropriately targeted programme of trial trenching. This was done and two contrasting possibilities about the origins of a moated site, which lay in the study area were investigated. The first was that the moated site was the Archbishop of York's manor house (dating to the late 13th-early 14th century), and the second, (considered the more likely) that the moat was created for an orchard in the 18th century.
