Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out along the proposed route of a channel diversion, to be carried out as part of a wider flood defence scheme in the Lower Colne Valley. An earlier desk-top study had identified that artefacts and sites of most periods had been found in the valley with, for example, important Upper Palaeolithic deposits to the north of Staines, and Iron Age and other prehistoric occupation just to the south of the route. Cropmarks visible on aerial photographs had also indicated a variety of sites of prehistoric and later date close to the proposal site. During the evaluation, 13 trenches were excavated. A small gully was revealed within each of Trenches 1 and 2; these were considered likely to be of post-medieval date, as iron nails were recovered from one, and a modern brick fragment from the surface of the other. Within Trench 13, a pit containing burnt flint, charcoal flecks and a small fragment of prehistoric, probably Bronze Age, pottery was recorded. Adjacent to this was a spread of burnt flint and charcoal-rich soil, from which a sherd of Bronze Age or later prehistoric pottery was recovered. [AIP]
