Abstract: |
A desk-top study to assess the archaeological implications of proposed development was undertaken. The proposal area was occupied by two large 19th century buildings, the Grovesnor Hotel and The George Railway Hotel (Grade II listed) and a number of other modern buildings. The assessment showed that the site was situated in an area which had seen considerable development since at least the 13th century. Remains of the Austin Friary of 1313 may have survived, even though they may have been cut by later cellars and services. The 14th century Temple Street water conduit also ran through the site and survival of certain portions was possible. It was also suggested that if the Portwall and its ditch extended as far west as Temple Gates, features would survive beneath ground level in the assessment area. The George Railway Hotel was shown to have a c17th century antecedent called the George Inn, which was either incorporated in the Hotel's interior or would survive beneath the present building.
